Setting the Table for the Future: A Collaborative Conversation with Indigenous Leaders

Setting the Table for the Future: A Collaborative Conversation with Indigenous Leaders

The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce recently hosted its annual Conversation with Indigenous Leaders, an event dedicated to building stronger relationships and fostering collaboration between local Nations, governments, and community partners.

This year’s gathering was different. City and Nation staff, leadership, and economic development partners came together in a single room to share information, strengthen understanding, and explore what economic development could look like — not just for today, but for the next seven generations.

The conversation centered on collaboration, shared planning, and future nation-building, focusing on how communities can align long-term visions for land use, infrastructure, and community well-being. Guided by a spirit of respect and unity, participants reflected on how future planning can honor culture, community, and shared opportunities.

Leaders from Skowkale, Sqwá, Cheam, Yakweakwioose, and Tzeachten First Nations, along with representatives from Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Chilliwack and local government, discussed common priorities such as infrastructure development, housing, and sustainable land use. A recurring theme emerged — the importance of seven-generation thinking, ensuring decisions made today serve both ancestors and future generations

The meeting also highlighted the shared desire for continued dialogue and ongoing collaboration through working groups, joint planning, and open communication channels. The tone was hopeful, constructive, and forward-thinking — truly a meeting of the minds.

As one participant summarized, “The land, air, water, and stories — these are what we all share.”

The table has been set for meaningful, ongoing conversations that will shape a collective vision for the future of our region — one grounded in trust, partnership, and long-term prosperity for all who call Chilliwack home.
