Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce Response to the Federal Budget
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 5, 2025
Chilliwack, BC
The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce echoes the BC Chamber of Commerce’s response to the federal budget and acknowledges the government’s efforts to support productivity and competitiveness through investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, and critical mineral development. These measures are important to advancing long-term economic opportunities across British Columbia.
However, for many small and medium-sized businesses—the backbone of communities like Chilliwack—there remains a sense of uncertainty. While accelerated deductions for manufacturing and large-scale industry are welcome, there is limited relief for small businesses outside of those sectors. We remain hopeful that the benefits of these investments will eventually trickle down to support broader segments of the business community, particularly those still navigating inflationary pressures and rising operational costs.
As the BC Chamber notes, economic growth has slowed while government spending continues to increase at an unsustainable pace. The growing deficit—now at $78.3 billion—raises legitimate concerns about long-term fiscal stability. When deficits rise as a percentage of GDP, a greater portion of future budgets must be directed toward interest payments rather than economic development, workforce investment, or business support. Without economic growth or reduced spending, this trend could threaten Canada’s credit rating and increase borrowing costs across all sectors.
Overall, we share the BC Chamber’s optimism for targeted competitiveness measures but remain cautious about the country’s fiscal trajectory. The success of this budget will depend on its ability to generate tangible, inclusive growth that strengthens local economies—like ours in Chilliwack—while maintaining fiscal responsibility for generations to come.
