November – A Message from the Executive Director

Chamber Report November 2019

Message from the Executive Director, Leanna Kemp

Giving Season is fast approaching. It’s a time when individuals, communities and organizations come together with a commitment to open their hearts and wallets to help those in need. It is quite possibly the most wonderful time of year.
The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce has a few reasons why you should be as excited about the giving season as we are….

  1. This season generally puts most people in better spirits
  2. We all have our own holiday traditions, your contributions to someone or an organization in need helps them to create their own traditions. Every dollar you contribute makes an impact.
  3. Giving Season gives the opportunity to start the New Year off right.

“ As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands—one for helping yourself and one for helping others”—Audrey Hepburn

What we have been up to:
The last month has been a busy one. The Chilliwack Chamber of Commerce consists of 13 board members and 4 committees: Policy and Issues, Communications and Marketing, Membership and Governance. Each of these committees has their own purpose and objectives which support our CORE Strategic Anchors; Connect, Advocate, Recognize and Educate.
Advocacy Update:
We have been working hard at identifying key business issues that we can assist in advocating for positive change at either the municipal or provincial levels of government. In October, our committee participated in a Policy 101 Workshop with the BC Chamber of Commerce. We learned the most important piece to writing effective Policy is involving our members. Over the next few months we will be meeting with key stakeholders, business members and other community members to gather the info we need to address Chilliwack’s key business issues. For ideas, suggestions or to learn more, please contact Leanna at leanna@chilliwackchamber.com

Educate Update:
October hosted a very special event; a unique, cultural, educational experience with Dallas Yellowfly of 3 Crows Productions who gave a theatrical storytelling performance like no other. Words cannot express or capture the profound impact on all attendees as we learned about the effects of the Residential schools both to the survivors and their families. This event was unforgettable!
The Chamber Executive Team along with our partners at Sto:lo Community futures and CEPCO (Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation) had the honor of attending a conversation with National Chief Perry Bellegarde on Honoring Promises: Priorities for Progress and Prosperity. National Chief Bellegarde addressed the effects and influence of First Nations on the Federal Agenda and why First Nations priorities are Canada’s priorities.
