Know Your Voting System:
First Past the Post vs Proportional Representation

This fall, B.C. will choose whether to keep our current first-past-the-post electoral system, or change to a system of Proportional Representation.

If a majority of people are in favour of proportional representation (PR), then one of three systems — which voters will rank in order of preference in a second question on the ballot — will be adopted for any future provincial election.

Join the Chilliwack Chamber and Guest Speaker, Bruce Hallsor, Managing Partner at Crease Harman LLP, for a better understanding of our current electoral system versus the proposed options of Proportional Representation.

What is First Past the Post?
A First past the Post (FPTP) voting method is one in which voters indicate on a ballot the candidate of their choice, and the candidate who receives the most votes wins. This is sometimes described as winner takes all.

What is Proportional Representation?
Proportional Representation (PR) is a democratic principle specifying that people should be represented in proportion to how they voted. This means the percentage of seats a party has in the legislature should reflect the percentage of people who voted for that party.

*This event is suited for anyone that wishes to have a better understanding of Canada's election process.
