As a mother of 3, I never imagined that I would have to experience the current world events with my family. Parenting feels very different and overwhelming right now for all of us, and it is completely normal to feel that way. There are so many unknowns, and I think it is important to remind our kids that there are many strong people that are working on solutions and on keeping us safe. Reassure your kids often, engage in play, and create a routine- even if that is a routine through play. Creating predictability in a day is very important right now as it mimics our normal day to day routines.
I have been using words to discuss what is going on as ‘uncomfortable’ and refraining from speaking about how this is ‘scary’. Discomfort implies that it will ease, and it will. And we can all relate to being uncomfortable.
It is important to check in with our young people to see if they have questions, and it is ok to let them you do not know some answers and that you can look into getting them some answers. Remind them that this is a new experience for all of us!
There are many professionals that parents can connect with as well as online classes and workshops during this time. It is great to connect with a professional as there are many moments where we can feel incredibly overwhelmed.
